Say the word "Hyundai" to some people and they will respond with "cheap cars" as their answer for describing the Korean automotive giant. Known for building the Accent, Elantra, and other low-priced vehicles, it isn't hard for consumers to get a new set of wheels at prices starting around $10K, thanks to special rebates the brand is currently offering.

Put Away The Honda Bikes - Cheap Cars Are Coming

But those prices are a small fortune to people in places like India, where the standard mode of transportation for many families is piling on their Honda motorbike and heading out. Buses and trains in India are crammed with people who can't afford even the most basic transportation, but thanks to Ratan Tata who has promised to build a $2500 car for the Indian market, that is expected to change.

Since Tata's announcement in January of this year, several other global automakers have responded by saying that they, too, will build affordable cars for India and similar markets, though stopping short of saying they'd be able to match the Nano's price.

Hyundai's Absence, Kia's Too

Curiously absent from the clamoring legions of "let's make cheap cars for India" clamor has been Hyundai. Nissan, Peugeot, VW, GM, and several Japanese brands have announced their quest for cheap car greatness, but until yesterday not a peep was heard from Hyundai. Seeing that they already own controlling interest in Kia, some sort of car from the joint automakers could possibly supply the emerging market.

Hyundai's response was made official in a recent interview with Hyundai Motor India managing director and CEO Heung-soo Lheem who told Indian media that Hyundai would bring a car retailing for $3500 to the Indian market by 2011.

Half The Price Of The Hyundai Santro

The ultra-low cost Hyundai car will cost about half the price of its current barebones model, the Santro, which sells for just over US$6000. Lheem said that Hyundai's Namyang Technology Research Center is currently developing the budget vehicle, which will be produced in India and exported to other countries. Hyundai says that the yet-to-be-named model will be far superior to the Nano in quality and performance, likely a good thing considering that the Nano could not possibly sell stateside due to safety issues.

The global trend is for automakers to continue developing cars for emerging markets as international wealth increases and a growing middle class demands their own transportation. Sure, the pressure on the world oil supply will only worsen, but by that time the availability of plug-in hybrids such as the Chevy Volt could lessen that pressure elsewhere.

The important thing to bear in mind is that the quality and selection of tools you take along is significantly more important than the quantity. Chosen carefully, you can reduce the weight and size of your tool kit without compromising its effectiveness. Another point to bear in mind is the means of carrying your tools. Although a macho-looking red metal tool box with ball-bearing runners and chrome hinges will look impressive, it will be very noisy as all those tools clatter around while you are on the move – and very heavy, too. A better alternative is an old holdall - it can be squashed into the corner of a locker, will deaden the sound of the tools, and weigh next to nothing compared to a box.

So what tools should you take?

WD40 - A can of this is seen much like the 'magic sponge' on the football pitch: a sort of cure-all; and that's pretty much the case. It's ideal for sorting out seized fixings and stopping squeaks. But it's excellent for electrical work, too. If you find a gungy electrical connection, a quick clean with some emery cloth and a squirt of WD40 is usually enough to sort things out.

Spanners - The secret is not to take a full set, which might well consist of seven or eight pieces and weigh a couple of kilos – there are not that many times that you are likely to need a spanner in the course of general maintenance of your motorhome. Leave most of your spanners at home; you'll need the one for changing the gas bottles, and a small one (typically 12 or 13mm) for removing the battery, but little else. Pack a small adjustable spanner in case you have a loose nut here or there, but unless you're going to carry out serious mechanical work, there's little call for a spanner.

Screwdrivers - As with spanners, there's little point in taking a whole load of screwdrivers with you when, in all probability, two or three would suffice. One large flat-bladed screwdriver will double usefully as a pry-bar for removing wheel trims and generally 'persuading' troublesome bits and bobs. A regular Phillips and a flat-bladed screwdriver will be good enough for general work but put a small electrical screwdriver in, too, for those fiddly little jobs. If you have a modern motorhome, buy a couple of torx-headed screwdrivers for removing interior trim: T20 and T25 sizes are very popular in Fiat and Peugeot models.

Torque Wrench - A torque wrench may seem a touch extravagant but it is essential for checking that your wheel nuts are tight. Throw away your standard wheel brace and replace it with a large, good quality, torque wrench equipped with the correct socket for securing your wheel nuts. It will also help ensure that you do not over tighten the nuts and damage them.

PTFE Tape - PTFE stands for Polytetrafluoroethylene… otherwise known as Teflon! This thread-sealing tape is ideal whatever problem you encounter, be it a plumbing or engine leak. Simply wrap the stricken thread in tape, retighten the fitting and there's a fair chance your problem will be solved. PTFE tape costs pennies to buy and weighs almost nothing.

Utility Knife - There is no substitute for one of these when you need a blade to remove something. The knife is an old design – neither clever nor sophisticated, but it really works well. The cheapest models cost as little as £1, but put a good blade in the handle and it will be as good and effective as the best.

Insulating Tape - Quite simply, a must have. If a wire's insulation gets damaged, or you need to join two wires, wrapping any bare wire with insulating tape will prevent trouble in the future. A length of wire - A piece of wire is always useful to have around. If wire gets cut or damaged, you can always bridge the break with a piece you have to hand. As you never know the particular use the wire is likely to be put to, it is best to opt for a heavy gauge. In an emergency, if you end up using a wire which is too thick it will be unlikely to cause a problem, but if the wire is too thin, it will heat up and, in extreme cases, could even cause a fire.

Cable Ties - These are great for get-you-home repairs. You can use them to hold all sorts of items in place: starter motors, air filters, wheel trims, wing mirrors and the like. Cable ties cost just pence to buy, are virtually indestructible and even a large handful of them weigh next to nothing.

Pliers - A simple pair of pliers can be as cheap as £3 or £4. They can be used for cutting and stripping wire, gripping screws with broken heads and you can always use your pliers when all your normal tools have been defeated.

Engine Oil - Your motorhome is likely to have a pint or so of water on board for emergency topping up, but many owners travel without engine oil. Keeping the oil level correct is simple and essential maintenance.

Length of Rope / Strong String - The number of possible uses for a length of rope is endless and you really should have some with you. Whether it's for tethering a piece of luggage, something which has broken, or just providing extra security for your bike rack, it's never a bad idea to have some on board.

Electrical Terminals and a pair of purpose-made Crimping Pliers - Wires and terminals can break due to a number of factors such as vibration, carelessness and corrosion, so having a means of joining wires or replacing fractured terminals is a must. Electrical terminals cost pennies and can quickly fix many simple electrical problems.

A Piece of Rag - A ready supply of rag is invaluable. A clean rag is good for dusting the dashboard and wiping the windows, a manky one, kept under the bonnet, is handy for wiping the dipstick, mopping up oil and screen-wash spills and general dirty work.

Foot Pump and Tyre Pressure Gauge - Tyres are not a fit-and-forget part, so a pressure gauge is a must, to guard against under-inflation. If your tyres are soft, a foot pump is just the job for getting them back up to pressure.

Motorhome Insurance – make sure that you check your insurance cover before setting off. Is your policy due for renewal?

From 2003 many Motorhomes have come with a new type of wiring called CANbus, short for Controlled Area Network. This method of wiring vehicles means that the wiring actually sends data which allows the engine to communicate with various electrical parts of the vehicle. It was actually developed by Bosch in 1983, but will become a standard way for all vehicles to be wired within the next few years.

So, what does this mean for the humble Motorhome owner?

Almost every Motorhome that is manufacturer with CANbus wiring will already have a remote control, which operates the vehicles central locking. It will also have a built-in Thatcham Category 2 approved engine immobiliser too!

Motorhomes with CANbus wiring include the Fiat Ducato from 2006 onwards, the Citroen Berlingo from 2003, Ford Transits from 2006, Mercedes Sprinters and Vito’s from 2006 and the Peugeot Expert and Boxer also from 2006.

Although owning a Motorhome with CANbus wiring means that your choice of security system is reduced dramatically, the good news is the fact that you are already half way there, having a Thatcham approved immobiliser and remote controlled central locking.

When installing an alarm to one of these vehicles we always opt for the new Laserline 670T system, which is Thatcham Category 2-1 approved (meaning it upgrades the existing factory fitted Category 2 immobiliser, to a Thatcham Category 1), so may well attract a discount from your insurance company. It was designed specifically for Motorhomes with CANbus wiring and like other Laserline products, has wireless capability. Therefore, we can fit wireless magnetic contact switches to the habitation entrance, lockers, garages, and any other item such as satellite dishes and bikes. It will also take the addition of a wireless infra red PIR sensor to protect the habitation area.

You can also add a module to this system which will close the front electric windows if left open, when the alarm is armed. A tilt sensor can also be added to protect the Motorhome from being jacked-up!

It’s really easy to use too, as it utilises the Motorhomes existing remote control central locking system. So, when you use the remote control to lock or unlock the Motorhome doors, it arms or disarms the alarm. This makes it extremely user friendly, as you’ll never have to explain to anyone how to use it. And better still, without having to have yet another remote control attached to your key-ring, you’ll never get in a muddle.

As with any Thatcham approved security system, the Laserline 670T is only valid for insurance purposes if fitted by a Thatcham recognised installer.

GAP Security is the UK's only truly nationwide mobile installer or alarms, immobilisers and tracking systems. If you are looking for motorhome alarms, please visit our website at http://www.gapsecuritydirect.co.uk

A fun weekend in Nottingham is all about getting active so get off your bum and check out our pick of the best active weekends this lively city has to offer.

The National Water Sports Centre is a short hop from the city centre, and you’ll have the chance to do just about anything on water here. Choose from white-water rafting on the adrenalin pumping man made course, water skiing, kayaking, surfing, power-boating or sailing to name a few. This is the perfect place for water babies who love a bit of action, and there’s full tuition available for beginners.

So, you’ve dried off and now it’s time to head to the National Ice Centre, to test your skating skills. Make like the stars and enjoy a dance on ice, or laugh at yourself as you fall flat on your face. Whatever your skating talents, you’ll be able to practice them here. Of course, the National Ice Centre is also home to the oldest Ice Hockey team in the UK – the Nottingham Panthers. If your ice skating skills are above average then why not take it one step further and take part in an ice hockey game, but you will need some of your own kit for this one!

Ok, now it’s time to warm up and try our fabulous Bungee Running Package! This course is so much fun, you’ll be laughing your way down the bungee run, until the mighty power of the bungee cord pulls you all the way back to the start. How far will you get? You’ll also have the chance to test your wits on the Rage Buggies, Quad Bikes or Chuckle Buggies. Compete against your mates for the fastest times! This package also includes VIP club entry and one night’s accommodation so you can rest your weary head after a fun-filled, action packed day!

Now we’re heading out to the forest, and no, not to spot some men in tights! There’s a huge variety of action packed activities on offer here, so why not try some 4x4 off road-ing or the somewhat more challenging blindfold driving. Yes, you are actually blindfolded as you listen to your team’s instructions and try to steer the sporty 4x4 around the course and finish in one piece. If you fancy a fitness challenge, then have a go at smashing some time records on the Jungle Assault Course as you cover two acres of land attempting to negotiate rope ladders, scramble nets, walls, bridges and pools, to name a few. If you do well, a place on the Krypton Factor may well be yours!! Speed freaks and rally fans have to try the Rally Driving experience; after a tutorial from qualified instructors you’ll be let loose on the tracks in a full-specification Peugeot Rally Car.

And, if all that wasn’t active enough, why don’t you try a fantastic and challenging team-building or multi activity days? From physical assault courses to off-road driving and sheep dog handling, there are activities to suit everyone here. Your day can be tailor made to include the fun-filled action packed challenges that you and your team want to take part in.

If you’re still standing after all that, then head back to the city to check out the best of Nottingham’s pubs and bars. You’ll definitely have deserved a beer!

There are many compelling reasons to scooters nowadays as more and more people are looking to adopt this form of transport.
There are many compelling reasons to scooters nowadays as more and more people are looking to adopt this form of transport. Scooters aren't as affected by traffic conditions in city centres, normally parking is free and is much easier to find compared to trying to park a car. Then there is not having to rely on public transport, the cheaper running costs compared to a car and if you are based in London, no congestion charge to pay.

The cheaper running costs is a big plus especially recently as petrol knocked past an astounding 110p in the UK. Scooters and other motorbikes give much better mileage with a scooter providing two to three times the mpg of a car.

Although scooters aren't as big as in mainland Europe, we still have a huge range of manufacturers to choose from, with plenty of brand names to choose from and riskier scooter manufacturers. There are many Chinese-made scooters doing the rounds at very tempting prices. However like a car a scooter needs servicing and can require replacement parts. If you look to get help from the manufacturer then there is no guarantee it will be there from a Chinese manufacturer unlike what you can come to expect from major brands such as Peugeot, Honda and Suzuki. Chinese scooters and bikes are also known to be of poorer quality and therefore will start to have problems meaning there is a danger to riding a scooter that isn't safe. Therefore the advice is to stay clear; the money you save on buying the scooter is likely to be lost in huge level of depreciation.

Look at scooters for sale from a reputable company that has an established dealer network so should you needs parts it isn't going to be much trouble to repair the scooter or if it is second hand, buy a brand of scooter that you have heard of before.

During World War II in the middle of the 20th century Coventry had the dubious honour of being the UKs third most bombed city after London and Plymouth. The reason that Coventry was so heavily targeted during the war was its industrial base in munitions and military vehicle production. Sadly, as with so many other UK cities, that industrial production base has virtually disappeared leaving only a few truly industrial scale companies operating in the city. Having played an important role in the UK motor industry for many decades with such illustrious names as: Hillman, Standard, Rolls Royce and Triumph - cars, motor-bikes and pedal cycles. Coventry now only produces vehicles for niche markets following the recent closure of the French owned Peugeot car production plant at Ryton. Coventry city council is currently securing inward investment to attract new businesses to replace those that have disappeared or are in decline.

Car production does continue in Coventry, although for how long is a matter of much speculation. Although currently owned by the Ford Motor Company, Jaguar has its corporate headquarters in a production facility at its Browns Lane site in Allesley. Since opening in 1941 it has become the main veneer production plant for Jaguar cars, as well as having its head offices and heritage centre. At nearby Whitley is the Jaguar Design, Research & Development Centre, where all the companies engineering work is carried out. In total, Jaguar employs over 2500 people in the city. Ford Motor Company is currently trying to sell off Jaguar, in order to clear other company debts. One of the most familiar sites in all major UK towns and cities is the famous black cab or Hackney taxis. These are made by the LTI company who are based at Holyhead Road in Coventry. LTI have been making taxis for sixty years, in which time over 100,000 have rolled off their production line. LTI employs nearly 500 people at its production plant, making it a significant employer in the city. Formed by the amalgamation of two companies and now owned by AGCO, Massey-Ferguson is one of the best known manufacturers of farm tractors in the world. They began making tractors in Coventry in the early 1950s and now have their headquarters in Stoneleigh, near Kenilworth. The company now makes tractors and a range of combine harvesters and quad bikes.

Ericssons is a telecommunications company with premises in the New Century Park, not far from the city centre. Having subsumed the former Marconi and GPT works in the city, it now employs over 2000 people, manufacturing and engineering networking and switching gear for international telecommunications clients. Another international telecommunications company - Cable and Wireless - has its UK training centre in the business park at Warwick University, on the outskirts of the Coventry. The headquarters for Dunlop Aerospace are located in Coventry to the north of the city near the M6 junction 3 at Longford. Where it not only manufactures aerospace braking systems but also designs and markets them. It currently has contracts for braking systems to BAE, Lockheed-Martin and the Airbus A380 aeroplanes.

Along with many other cities that have seen their manufacturing base eroded over recent years, Coventry has attracted some service industries to the area to provide alternative jobs. Being very close to the centre of England and having excellent motorway links to the rest of the country, Coventry has become a major distribution centre for many delivery and courier companies. Parcel Force has its national depot at Coventry whilst TNT, DHL, ANC and UPS all have depots in the city employing several hundred people in all.

Coventry has a long association with the textiles industry, particularly wool and silk, dating back to medieval times. Whilst several small textiles companies remain in Coventry it is currently best known for its Courtaulds factory and the development the Grafil carbon-fibre that is used in sports and automotive equipment and Tencel - the cellulose fibre made from wood-pulp.

As well as the textiles industry, Coventry was, up to the mid 19th century, the centre of watch-making in the UK. During its heyday in the early 1800s it employed over 75,000 people and was making 200,000 watches a year. As the century progressed watch making declined, the market becoming flooded with imports from the USA, until by the turn of the century the trade had all but ceased. Many workers went on to find employment in the rapidly developing bicycle manufacturing businesses, which at his time employed nearly 40,000 people in Coventry alone. In time some of these workers quite probably went on to become the founding workers in the new motor car industry. By 1910 there were dozens of car manufacturers in Coventry, with long forgotten names like: Iden, Centaur and Aurora. Some other companies were more enduring such as: Humber, Rover and from 1928 - Jaguar.

In the wake of the latest Budget announced by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, there is growing confusion about which cars will be clobbered for more tax according to one of the UK’s leading car insurers.

Swinton Car Insurance is concerned that the latest wave of car tax rises outlined by Gordon Brown is leaving drivers unsure about which category their car fits into and whether their vehicle is one of the heaviest polluters.

The Manchester-based insurance company believes that the vast majority of drivers of family saloon type vehicles are unsure where their car fits on the pollution scale and how much it is costing them.

But, more alarmingly, an increasing number of drivers are getting worried that they may unwittingly be falling into Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) banding brackets which are becoming demonised for being so-called gas guzzlers.

Jon Kirk of Swinton Insurance said that it is all very well the Chancellor raising car tax for the heaviest polluting vehicles and lowering it for the most environmentally friendly cars, but the simple truth is very few people actually know which of the seven A-G bandings their cars fall into.

“It came as no surprise that the Chancellor put up car tax on the heaviest polluting vehicles in the latest Budget,” said Jon. “And most people know that 4x4s are the worst polluters on UK roads, but that’s not the whole story.”

As he points out, figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders revealed that the worst polluting band only accounted for 7.5 per cent of all new cars sold in 2006.

At the other end of the scale the number of cars which fall into the first two bands only accounts for 4.7 per cent of cars.

“This means that nearly 90% of cars on UK roads fall into just four of the seven bands,” said Jon. “So you can see where the concern is arising as there seems to be a huge mid-ground where owners of typical family cars can’t be sure where on the scale they are in terms of carbon emissions.”

Swinton Insurance points to a list of examples of cars in the different bands to try to help clear up some of the confusion.

Band A (cars which emit less than 100g/km) includes the Honda Insight petrol electric hybrid and the Smart diesel.

Band B (cars which emit between 101-120g/km) includes the Toyota Prius 1.5 litre petrol-electric hybrid, Smart car 0.7 litre petrol, Citroen C2 1.4 litre diesel and the Ford Fiesta 1.4 diesel.

Band C (cars which emit between 121-150g/km) includes Fiat Panda 1.2 petrol, Ford Ka 1.3 petrol, VW Golf 1.9 TDI diesel, Ford Focus 1.8 TDCi diesel hatchback and the Jaguar X-type 2.0 diesel saloon.

Band D (cars which emit between 151-165g/km) includes the VW Passat estate 1.9 TDI diesel, MINI One hatchback 1.6 petrol, Ford Fiesta 1.6i petrol and the Peugeot 307 1.4 petrol.

Band E (cars which emit between 166-185g/km) includes the Ford Mondeo saloon 1.8i petrol, Vauxhall Vectra 1.8 petrol saloon, Rover 75 1.8 petrol and the Toyota Avensis 1.8 petrol saloon/hatchback.

Band F (cars which emit between 186-225g/km) includes the Land Rover Freelander 2.0 diesel, Toyota RAV4 2.0 litre petrol, Audi A4 1.6 petrol, BMW 5 series estate 3.0 diesel and the Mazda MX5 2.0 petrol.

Band G (cars which emit more than 225g/km) includes the Jaguar X-type 2.0 petrol saloon auto, Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe 3.6 litre petrol, Renault Espace 2 litre petrol Range Rover 4.4 V8 petrol auto and the BMW X5 4.8 litre petrol.

Simply by making these examples known, Swinton Insurance hopes to put drivers at ease because they have a better framework to work from when trying to establish how much more they are going to have to pay each year in car tax.

“The biggest problem is that most motorist have little idea how much the increases announced by Gordon Brown are actually going to cost them until they receive their car tax renewal notices,” said Jon.

“And given the Chancellor’s timescales, some people won’t feel the full effect of his announcement for another 12 to 18 months.”

While there are losers who will have to pay more car tax because of the Chancellor’s announcement, there are also winners. Drivers of cars in Band B will see their road tax bills cut by £15 to £35.

But this will only be short-lived because the Chancellor also said VED will rise by £5 for each of the next three years. Drivers of petrol cars also face an extra hike because Gordon Brown said he will be aligning the differing rates between petrol and diesel cars to the higher diesel rate

Swinton Group was acquired by its parent company MMA Insurance in May 2001. http://www.swinton.co.uk/

1. Pay to give your car a professional valeting, including the engine. Purchase new floor mats and freshen the interior by spraying ‘new car perfume’ All these actions will ensure that your prospective purchaser gains the most positive impression that you have taken really good care of your vehicle.

2. Ensure that you price your vehicle correctly. Do your homework, Check local classified websites to compare other cars of the same make and specification being sold privately in your area. Place in the middle price range.

3. Place your car on a popular classifieds website. Include as many details as possible about your vehicle. Think about the types of things you would like to read if you were the buyer. Take photographs from different angles. Try to park in a picturesque spot to take photos.

4. Emphasise the car’s best features. How reliable is it or how economical on petrol/diesel is it. If you’re struggling, try to think what attracted you to the car in the first place. If it hasn’t done much mileage make sure you say so.

5. Produce a professional looking ‘For Sale’ sign detailing price and your telephone number on your computer if you can, or ask a friend to do this for you. When parking, always try and place your car in a prominent position for maximum exposure.

6. When someone calls to arrange viewing, arrange to meet them half way from their address. Meet at a safe spot with people around i.e. a supermarket car park. This will make it easier for them to agree to meet you to look over your car and more opportunities to ultimately sell it.

7. Don’t forget, just because you have a pet name for your Golf or Peugeot and think it’s the greatest thing in the world it doesn’t mean potential buyers will. Ask the going rate and don’t get emotional or take it personally if you have to take a little bit less for your treasured “Betsey” it’s just business.

8. Be prepared to negotiate over the price. People like to feel they are getting a good deal. If you can afford to be a little flexible you will have more chance of selling your car.

9. Once you’ve agreed on a price with the buyer, discuss the best method of payment. Cash transactions will require both buyer and seller to sign a cash receipt. However we would recommend a bankers draft or cashier’s cheque drawn from the buyer’s local bank.

10. Final piece of advice – Smile, be polite and state the facts.

Congratulations! After taking note of all these tips you will be well on your way to selling your old car. When you’ve finally banked that cheque it’s time to hunt down that new stylish car you’ve always wanted.

The number of vehicles on the world's roads continues to increase year on year, especially in large cities were increasing traffic volumes causes major congestion, accidents and environmental damage. During rush hour in most cities, traffic congestion reaches unbearable levels. Gridlock is a daily occurrence for the long suffering city worker.

Here are a few facts, which represents the result of increasing traffic levels:

Congestion wastes more than 2.3 billion gallons of fuel each year in the U.S.
The annual ‘lost’ time per driver in the U.S. is in excess of 47 hours per year
Traffic delays cost the U.S. economy an estimated $63.1b per year
Drivers in central London spend 50 percent of their driving time in traffic jams.
It was estimated that London lost between £2-4M every week in terms of lost productivity caused by congestion

To solve the problem of increasing traffic levels, major cities have come up with different ideas. In London, for example, they have implemented the controversial Congestion Charge. Every vehicle that drives between 7:00am and 6:00pm within a clearly defined zone, has to pay £8 daily Congestion Charge. Ken Livingstone, the Mayor of London, had made transport to one of the main planks of his incumbency. His goal was to reduce traffic congestion and improve journey times by encouraging people to choose other forms of transport if possible. As a result, traffic levels have reduced by 21 percent, since the Congestion Charge started. Another positive effect is that cycling within the central London zone increased by 43 per cent, accidents and key traffic pollutants have reduced and most importantly, air quality has improved.

Sao Paulo in Brazil devised another way to deal with increasing traffic levels. Each vehicle has a specific day of the week, where it is not allowed to drive during rush hour. The license plate number determines the day on which you can drive. Traffic police and hundreds of strategically positioned traffic cameras, backed by computerized image-recognition systems, picks up vehicles that are on the roads without permission.

In the United States and Canada, they try to support carpools by offering special lanes on the roads that can be used only by cars carrying two or more people. These special lanes are called “HOV Lane” – High Occupancy Vehicle Lane. Unique schemes have been developed where people register to be a ‘car buddy’ so that the car owner can use the HOV lane. A positive knock-on effect is that people have expanded their circle of friends as a result.

Cologne in Germany implemented a “Low Emission Zone” to enhance air quality and to avoid congestion. The “Low Emission Zone” allows only environmentally friendly cars to access the city centre. Cars with high pollutant levels and larger vehicle are banned from entering this zone. In order to drive into Cologne, you have to have a sticker saying that your car is not a polluting vehicle. Failure to do so will result in a fine. Unlike other cities that charge people to drive in major cities, Cologne has an excellent public transport system. Quite often, it is quicker to catch the train door to door than it is to drive

In today's world of climate change and global warming, it is good to see that cities can do something for the environment. Trying to decrease traffic volumes by implementing fees or even banning non environmentally friendly cars is not just good for the environment; it also benefits the residents with a better and more relaxed transport infrastructure by encouraging people to choose public transportation or even get on their bike!

For the traveller however, many of the major car rental companies have green fleets that would make even the most environmentally conscious city happy. In Europe, most of the car rental companies have diesel cars on their fleet and in the USA, Hybrid cars are common. In Australia, the Toyota Prius is the car of environmental choice. So, even the most ardent Eco-Traveller will be accommodated when renting a car.

With the recession leaving more people in Britain strapped for cash, an increasing number of motorists are ditching their cars and turning to two wheelers.

As a result, the number of car accidents in the UK has dropped by 8 per cent for the year ending March 2009 compared to the year before, according to recent figures from the Department for Transport, (DfT).

Simon Douglas, the director of insurance provider, AA Insurance, stated that he was not surprised by the results.

He said: "This year has seen fuel prices rise along with other demands on family budgets, as well as rising levels of redundancy; all of which discourages car use: indeed, the DfT notes that traffic volumes fell by 2 per cent over the year."

Yet with the financial hole getting deeper and darker, the number of fraudulent claims have also soared as Brits attempt to find new ways to get hold of quick, easy cash in a bid to make ends meet.

However, those cheating on bike insurance could end up out of pocket in the future.

Fraudulent claims can only mean more debt

According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), Britons who file false insurance claims will face higher insurance costs in the future and are more likely to be rejected for loans.

ABI stated that insurance firms and other financial institutions keep the fraudulent claims of individuals on databases which can affect their credit ratings.

However, a vast number of claims are genuine and the number of motorcyclists falling victim to bike theft is soaring along with the number of bikes across Britain's roads.

According to the leading stolen vehicle recovery firm, Tracker, "more low value models" are catching the eye of thieves.

Bill Raynal, the managing director of Tracker, said: "Models such as the Peugeot Ludix worth just £1,000, are hot favourites with thieves, alongside £10,000 models such as the BMW R11650."

In June this year, a test conducted by the insurance provider, More Than, found that bike thieves are becoming more efficient in walking away with bikes, with one vehicle being stolen at London Bridge railway station after just 17 minutes of being left alone.

Bike theft hotspots highlighted

Glasgow was found to be the second worst place for bike theft after the vehicle was stolen under one hour and 30 minutes, with Birmingham taking third place at just under two hours.

Marketing director Pete Markey of More Than, said: "The experiment has shown us that it doesn't matter who you are or where you live: if you don't take the necessary precautions, it's only a matter of time before your bike is stolen.

It really does make sense then to ensure your bike is secured properly to an immovable object before you leave it unattended, and to think about taking out insurance cover just in case the worst should happen."

Mr Raynal advised motorcyclists to ensure they secure their vehicles.

He said: "All motorcycle owners need to take steps to protect their assets, as the current economic climate means many households aren't in the position to replace a stolen bike.

Having a tracking device installed offers owners that added level of security, increasing their chances of recovering their stolen bike."

Today your average Peugeot dealer has a host of cars to suit almost any purpose. What you may not realise however is that the history of this French car manufacturer is a fascinating tale that goes back over one hundred years. In the early days the Peugeot factory manufactured steel rods that were used in the bows for crinoline dresses, a product far removed from the cars we see on dealer forecourts today. This type of manufacturing however led the company into an important development, with knowledge of steel and in particular the bending of steel Peugeot was able to construct bicycles. In the nineteenth century the company produced a bike called 'Le Grand Bi' more colloquially known as the penny farthing.

At this stage the company was named Armand Peugeot and it was not until late in the nineteenth century that they produced their first motor car. This model was a tri-wheeled steam driven car that was made in incredibly small numbers; it is believed that only four were ever made. Understandably it is doubtful that such a car would be present on dealer forecourts toady, the majority are in museums in France. Steam driven cars had a short lifespan however and after the turn of the century Peugeot moved to producing cars with the internal combustion engine; with the assistance of Gottlieb Daimler.

Early cars still used steel wheels however although it was Peugeot who led the way in the introduction of rubber tyres, these early tyres however were solid rather than the pneumatic variants we use today. The company at this stage entered motor racing for the first time in a variety of road races around France.

Thanks to the raised profile due to success in motor racing, the company became popular with the French public, selling around three hundred cars a year at the turn of the century. This is quite an impressive feat considering that in the whole of France only twelve hundred were sold annually. In these years the company were also producing motorcycles thanks to the knowledge gained in the manufacturing of bikes. The popularity with the French at this point was assured, in 1903 the dealer car sales made up over half of the total sales within the country.

Twenty years later, despite the success of the company they decided to split their efforts, one half focussing on the bikes and motorcycles and one focussing on the manufacturing of cars. At this point the car manufacturing company came into its own, with the 201 model being marketed as the cheapest car in all of France; showing a dispensation for producing cars for ordinary members of the public. As previously stated Peugeot have always strived to innovate the market, during this period they developed the retractable roof and styled their cars in a curvaceous way that was popular with the French public.

The wars years saw a period of downtime for the company although in the post war years Peugeot attempted to court business in the booming United States. This was not totally successful due to the insular nature of the US car market although through a number of collaborations with Renault and Volvo in Europe the company was able to survive the post war decades. In the seventies the company was pulled into the PSA (Peugeot Societe Anonyme) parent company that also owned Citroen making it the largest car manufacturer in France with a dealer in almost every town.

Poor growth in the eighties was problematic for the company although the nineties saw resurgence and the creation of a strong position coming into the new century. Today it is one of the most popular European manufacturers with a range of cars to suit families, singles and even the executive. As the car market becomes evermore aggressive and competitive this company that started its life making dresses will have to continue to innovate to stay ahead.

platforms (with interchangeable brakes, suspension, and other parts) were common. Even so, only major makers could afford high costs, and even companies with decades of production, such as Apperson, Cole, Dorris, Haynes, or Premier, could not manage: of some two hundred American car makers in existence in 1920, only 43 survived in 1930, and with the Great Depression, by 1940, only 17 of those were left

.[13]

In Europe much the same would happen. Morris set up its production line at Cowley in 1924, and soon outsold Ford, while beginning in 1923 to follow Ford's practise of vertical integration, buying Hotchkiss (engines), Wrigley (gearboxes), and Osberton (radiators), for instance, as well as competitors, such as Wolseley: in 1925, Morris had 41% of total British car production. Most British small-car assemblers, from Abbey to Xtra had gone under. Citroen did the same in France, coming to cars in 1919; between them and other cheap cars in reply such as Renault's

10CV and Peugeot's 5CV, they produced 550,000 cars in 1925, and Mors, Hurtu, and others could not compete.[13] Germany's first mass-manufactured car, the Opel 4PS Laubfrosch (Tree Frog), came off the line at Russelsheim in 1924, soon making Opel the top car builder in Germany, with 37.5% of the market.[13]

Most automobiles in use today are propelled by gasoline (also known as petrol) or diesel internal combustion engines, which are known to cause air pollution and are also blamed for contributing to climate change and global warming.[14] Increasing costs of oil-based fuels, tightening environmental laws and restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions are propelling work on alternative power systems for automobiles. Efforts to improve or replace existing technologies include the development of hybrid vehicles, and electric and hydrogen vehicles which do not release pollution into the air.

Petroleum fuels Main article: Petroleum fuel engine Diesel Main article: Diesel engine

Diesel-engined cars have long been popular in Europe with the first models being introduced as early as 1922 [15] by Peugeot and the first production car, Mercedes-Benz 260 D in 1936 by Mercedes-Benz. The main benefit of diesel engines is a 50% fuel burn efficiency compared with 27%[16] in the best gasoline engines. A down-side of the Diesel engine is that better filters are required to reduce the presence in the exhaust gases of fine soot particulates called diesel particulate matter. Manufacturers are now starting to fit[when?] diesel particulate filters to remove the soot. Many diesel-powered cars can run with little or no modifications on 100% biodiesel and combinations of other organic oils.

Gasoline Main article: Petrol engine
2007 Mark II (BMW) Mini Cooper

Gasoline engines have the advantage over diesel in being lighter and able to work at higher rotational speeds and they are the usual choice for fitting in high-performance sports cars. Continuous development of gasoline engines for over a hundred years has produced improvements in efficiency and reduced pollution. The carburetor was used on nearly all road car engines until the 1980s but it was long realised better control of the fuel/air mixture could be achieved with fuel injection. Indirect fuel injection was first used in aircraft engines from 1909, in racing car engines from the 1930s, and road cars from the late 1950s.[16] Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) is now starting to appear in production vehicles such as the 2007 (Mark II) BMW Mini. Exhaust gases are also cleaned up by fitting a catalytic converter into the exhaust system. Clean air legislation in many of the car industries most important markets has made both catalysts and fuel injection virtually universal fittings. Most modern gasoline engines also are capable of running with up to 15% ethanol mixed into the gasoline - older vehicles may have seals and hoses that can be harmed by ethanol. With a small amount of redesign, gasoline-powered vehicles can run on ethanol concentrations as high as 85%. 100% ethanol is used in some parts of the world (such as Brazil), but vehicles must be started on pure gasoline and switched over to ethanol once the engine is running. Most gasoline engined cars can also run on LPG with the addition of an LPG tank for fuel storage and carburettor modifications to add an LPG mixer. LPG produces fewer toxic emissions and is a popular fuel for fork-lift trucks that have to operate inside buildings.

The hydrogen powered FCHV (Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicle) was developed by Toyota in 2005 Biofuels Main articles: Biofuel, Ethanol fuel, and biogasoline

Ethanol, other alcohol fuels (biobutanol) and biogasoline have widespread use an automotive fuel. Most alcohols have less energy per liter than gasoline and are usually blended with gasoline. Alcohols are used for a variety of reasons - to increase octane, to improve emissions, and as an alternative to petroleum based fuel, since they can be made from agricultural crops. Brazil's ethanol program provides about 20% of the nation's automotive fuel needs, as a result of the mandatory use of E25 blend of gasoline throughout the country, 3 million cars that operate on pure ethanol, and 6 million dual or flexible-fuel vehicles sold since 2003.[17] that run on any mix of ethanol and gasoline. The commercial success of "flex" vehicles, as they are popularly known, have allowed sugarcane based ethanol fuel to achieve a 50% market share of the gasoline market by April 2008.[18][19][20]

The all new Peugeot 5008

The stunning new Peugeot 5008 is the ultimate expression of space, luxury and comfort in an MPV model.
It combines all the manufacturer's key values but also builds further on the benefits expected by customers in this segment without any adverse effect on the vehicle's road holding.

With a choice of five or seven seats, technology including visual parking tips and TV screens for the rear seats, it’s the family car you and your kids have been waiting for.

Performance

At launch later this year the 5008 will be available with a choice of six diesel and petrol engine options. They will combine perfectly with the dynamic styling of this new family carrier. Combining performance and fuel economy, these engines also offer reduced levels of CO2 emissions together with great driveability.

Interior
This MPV exudes luxury designed for pure driving pleasure. The driver's seat of the Peugeot 5008 is undeniably original and innovative in the world of the people carrier. The raised driving position typical of this segment gives the driver excellent visibility and a real feeling of safety. There will be many of the Peugeot 5008 in Aldershot available; this family car has generated a lot of hype and with its stellar reputation from not only its predecessor but Peugeot themselves.

The driver and passenger comfort, along with optimum storage space, are key elements in the 5008.
The driver will enjoy a raised driving position, while a panoramic glass roof means a much brighter and lighter interior.
Meanwhile the smooth ‘flat folding’ rear seats mean added flexibility and the impressive large boot makes it perfect for active families wanting to transport bags, bikes and IKEA furniture.

Technology
The 5008 features a range of innovative features. It has a brand new system that measures an available parking space – and suggests the best way to park, so no more dented bumpers. It has a rear multimedia system with two seven-inch colour screens in the back of the front seat head restraints, to keep those nagging kids quiet, and as an added feature, each can show different videos simultaneously. The 5008 also has impressive Distance Alert radar, measuring the distance between the vehicles in front and providing information about safe braking distances. Front and rear parking assistance. Snow Motion, which adds a further function to the traditional traction control system, allowing the driver to move off and make effective progress on icy roads.

The New Citroen DS3

Citroen have finally unveiled the production version of its DS3, which was displayed for the first time at the 2009 Frankfurt motor show in September. Due to go on sale in spring 2010 and priced from around £12,500, it’s a car that has left us all excited and intrigued.

Citroen was very brave to revive the new DS badge as it’s based on the next C3, it’s the first of a new range of ‘near premium’ models which will hopefully include the DS4 and DS5 alternatives based on the future C4 and C5 models.

When the Citroen was first launched we had our doubts concerning styling and we were pleased to see Citroen hasn’t disappointed us by toning down the distinctive chic cues. The first photos of the production DS3 show a small hatch with all the flair of the concept version which we’d say is another sign that Citroen continues its design resurgence.

The most debatable and perhaps the most striking details on the DS3 are its ‘floating’ roof and the ‘shark fin’ B-pillar, with the upper portion of which is overlapped by the rear windows. One of the few changes from the concept is the replacement of its single exhaust with twin pipes.

The impressive interior is characterised by a dashboard strip that is available in six stunning finishes, with colour options also available for the rear-view mirror and doorsills.

The DS3 will be available with a range of two diesel and three petrol engines, mated to five- and six-speed gearboxes of which both engines emit lower than low CO2 emissions.

In line with its upmarket pretensions, the new Citroen DS3 comes with a range of options depending on spec of course including cruise control, sat-nav and a gear change indicator to encourage cleaner driving. We applaud Citroen’s boldness in nudging the brand image upwards although we are left nail biting at the thought of will this be enough the lure the buyers from their Mini’s?

With a 285-litre boot and a 60:40 split rear bench Peugeot ensures that the DS3 surpasses its target rivals, namely the Mini and Fiat 500, for practicality, so we think it has a good fighting chance against its toughest rivals, so here’s my tip, get down to your nearest showroom and get your hands on this new Peugeot DS3 in Aldershot asap, at least take it for a spin, you won’t be disappointed.

Since the 1920s, nearly all cars have been mass-produced to meet market needs, so marketing plans often have heavily influenced automobile design. It was Alfred P. Sloan who established the idea of different makes of cars produced by one company, so buyers could "move up" as their fortunes improved.

Reflecting the rapid pace of change, makes shared parts with one another so larger production volume resulted in lower costs for each price range. For example, in the 1930s, LaSalles, sold by Cadillac,

free articles directory

used cheaper mechanical parts made by Oldsmobile; in the 1950s, Chevrolet shared hood, doors, roof, and windows with Pontiac; by the 1990s, corporate drivetrains and shared platforms (with interchangeable brakes, suspension, and other parts) were common. Even so, only major makers could afford high costs, and even companies with decades of production, such as Apperson, Cole, Dorris, Haynes, or Premier, could not manage: of some two hundred American car makers in existence in 1920, only 43 survived in 1930, and with the Great Depression, by 1940, only 17 of those were left.[13]

free articles directory

In Europe much the same would happen. Morris set up its production line at Cowley in 1924, and soon outsold Ford, while beginning in 1923 to follow Ford's practise of vertical integration, buying Hotchkiss (engines), Wrigley (gearboxes), and Osberton (radiators), for instance, as well as competitors, such as Wolseley: in 1925, Morris had 41% of total British car production. Most British small-car assemblers,

from Abbey to Xtra had gone under. Citroen did the same in France, coming to cars in 1919; between them and other cheap cars in reply such as Renault's 10CV and Peugeot's 5CV, they produced 550,000 cars in 1925, and Mors, Hurtu, and others could not compete.[13] Germany's first mass-manufactured car, the Opel 4PS Laubfrosch (Tree Frog), came off the line at Russelsheim in 1924, soon making Opel the top car builder in Germany, with 37.5% of the market.[13]
