Say the word "Hyundai" to some people and they will respond with "cheap cars" as their answer for describing the Korean automotive giant. Known for building the Accent, Elantra, and other low-priced vehicles, it isn't hard for consumers to get a new set of wheels at prices starting around $10K, thanks to special rebates the brand is currently offering.

Put Away The Honda Bikes - Cheap Cars Are Coming

But those prices are a small fortune to people in places like India, where the standard mode of transportation for many families is piling on their Honda motorbike and heading out. Buses and trains in India are crammed with people who can't afford even the most basic transportation, but thanks to Ratan Tata who has promised to build a $2500 car for the Indian market, that is expected to change.

Since Tata's announcement in January of this year, several other global automakers have responded by saying that they, too, will build affordable cars for India and similar markets, though stopping short of saying they'd be able to match the Nano's price.

Hyundai's Absence, Kia's Too

Curiously absent from the clamoring legions of "let's make cheap cars for India" clamor has been Hyundai. Nissan, Peugeot, VW, GM, and several Japanese brands have announced their quest for cheap car greatness, but until yesterday not a peep was heard from Hyundai. Seeing that they already own controlling interest in Kia, some sort of car from the joint automakers could possibly supply the emerging market.

Hyundai's response was made official in a recent interview with Hyundai Motor India managing director and CEO Heung-soo Lheem who told Indian media that Hyundai would bring a car retailing for $3500 to the Indian market by 2011.

Half The Price Of The Hyundai Santro

The ultra-low cost Hyundai car will cost about half the price of its current barebones model, the Santro, which sells for just over US$6000. Lheem said that Hyundai's Namyang Technology Research Center is currently developing the budget vehicle, which will be produced in India and exported to other countries. Hyundai says that the yet-to-be-named model will be far superior to the Nano in quality and performance, likely a good thing considering that the Nano could not possibly sell stateside due to safety issues.

The global trend is for automakers to continue developing cars for emerging markets as international wealth increases and a growing middle class demands their own transportation. Sure, the pressure on the world oil supply will only worsen, but by that time the availability of plug-in hybrids such as the Chevy Volt could lessen that pressure elsewhere.

New car loses almost 40 percent of the total value within 3 years, and the depreciation started to slow down afterward. The previous car owner will have absorbed the steepest part of this depreciation cycle. Another benefit of getting the used car is the lower cost, and you will pay a lot less than what you pay for the new one. You will also save more on financing costs, car insurance, or auto insurance cost, insurance premiums, registration and licensing fees. So why not go for the used car?

No, there is also a downside of getting the used car. The used cars mean the greater chances of costly unwarranted repairs. You may also need a major maintenance for the car, including tires replacement, battery, brakes, muffler, and even perhaps the transmission. The used car is usually less reliable as you do not know what exactly wrong with it, how the previous owner treated the car. However, the situation may be different if some used models may actually be far reliable the some new ones.

So which one will you probably choose? If you have extra money and able to pay cash, then go for new one and enjoy the full feeling of original owner in mint and virgin condition. Otherwise, do not target higher than you able to reach if you can not. Make a practice of financial prudence, save your money and comfort yourself know that you will afford to have a purchase of a dream car when one day money is no object.

Some popular car manufacturer are Audi, Alfa Romeo, Bmw, Citroen, Ford, Fiat, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, Jeep, Kia, Land Rover, Lexus,Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mg, Mini and Mitsubishi, Proton, Perodua, Hicom, Naza and Inokom, Nissan, Peugeot, Renault, Rover, Seat, Subaru, Skoda, Suzuki, Toyota, Vauxhall and Volkswagen. Consider the auto insurance you will be getting, the cash advance you are able to get prepared and then you can select which car will you take. Whichever of these manufacturer have the vehicle that you want, and with the world wide web at your fingertip, it can be a great place to start with. Ideally you should list your requirements in order of importance, such as :

Auto Insurance Cost Economy of the car owner Vehicle size and types Price range Colour detail Specification, features and advantages

Do not get all carried away or otherwise everything will not be an enjoyable experience than it should be. Find the combination of what you ever dream. Happy searching and watch out for your next car instalment. Till then, and do not forget to subscribe with our blog, okay!

If you are looking for a small family car then chances are you will have been to the local car dealership to look at the latest offerings from Peugeot and Vauxhall. Both manufacturers have a long history of providing reliable vehicles to this segment of the market. The new Peugeot 308 and new Vauxhall Astra have built upon past success. So is it worth going new or should you opt for a used version of these classics?

The Peugeot 308

In September 2007 Peugeot released the Peugeot 308 under the tagline 'The drive of your life'. It was built on the success of its predecessor the 307. The designers have managed to incorporate high standards of safety equipment and excellent road handling into the new model. It provides a spacious interior and greater carrying capacity which can be expanded to 1,398 litres when the seats are folded. The Peugeot 308 boasts class leading aerodynamics that helps reduce fuel consumption and emissions. The 1.4 VTi 95bhp with 5-spd manual gearbox retails at Peugeot dealers in the UK from GBP11995. The 1.6 HDi 90 bhp 5-spd manual gearbox can cost as little as GBP13295. The car performs well with the 1.6 THP 150 bhp version reaching 0-60 mph in just 8.8 seconds and a maximum speed of 132 mph. The 1.6 HDi 110 bhp version boasts 60.1 miles per gallon consumption rate.

Vauxhall Astra

Designed to 'match the energy of your life' the Vauxhall Astra provides innovative features to provide flexible space alongside safety and security. The Astra comes with twin front airbags, front seat side impact airbags, Anti-locking breaking system (ABS) and Electro-Hydraulic Power-assisted Steering. The Astra provides a flexible 60/40 or 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat and a vertical load restraining net to help maximise the spacious interior. The 1.4i 16v Manual can be purchased for as little as GBP12915 with the 1.3CDTi 16v (90PS) Manual diesel retailing from GBP14500 at Vauxhall dealerships. The Vauxhall Astra Hatchback 1.6 16v 115 Life 5dr can achieve 0-60 in 11.5 seconds and has a maximum speed of 115 mph. It has a four star rating from What car?

A new car will benefit from your exact specifications and buying new can be extremely fulfilling. It is however worth considering that depreciation is the biggest cost when running a car. It may be worth buying a used vehicle. The biggest drop in value happens within the first 12 months and you can save a lot of money buying second hand. This might not mean you have to miss out on a warranty with many reputable dealers offering 12 months on used vehicles and there is always the option to take out your own policy with an independent provider. But the main benefit to a used vehicle is the price. Here is a brief introduction to the used versions of the Peugeot and Vauxhall small family cars.

Peugeot 307 (2001-)

The Peugeot 307 benefits from a stylish design and is packed full of safety equipment. Criticisms have been made of the cars handling and it also has one of the smaller rear spaces on the market. The used version has demonstrated some problems with the suspension and head gasket so it is beneficial to expect and scrutinise service history. There are so many on the market that they can be picked up for as little as GBP2595 to GBP12570 and can provide you with a bargain.

Vauxhall Astra (2004-)

The used Vauxhall Astra from the same supple ride composed handling and strong engine as its younger sibling. It is important to check for signs of crash damage and uneven tyre wear. It is advisable to shop around to make sure you find the right one for you and to expect a full service history. It is a very reliable vehicle made popular because of a reputation for its tough durable motor and therefore represents a good option for buying used. It is the fifth choice in what car? recommended used car buying guide. It will set you back between GBP5435 and GBP11720.

HAVANA, CUBA- Cuba is a world of its own often compared with a walk into a time machine.
An interesting example of this is that unbeknown to the rest of the world, Cuba even has its own unique system of branding your license plate to quickly identify to the world who you are and what rights you have and don't have in Cuba.

The spectrum of color coordinated license plates and special codes tell the ever watching eye of authority how important you are in the Cuban political and Economic system, your nationality, where you work and your rank.

In short your Cuban license plate say it all as you drive in posh 5th avenue or along the seaside Malecon.

Cuba's system of colored license plates was copied directly from the KGB in former Soviet Union. This coding system is yet another way Cuban authorities have kept control on their people and foreigners for decades.

Cuba Government Owned Cars
To be fair the fact is that the Cuban government owns most 95% of all the cars in Cuba. Cuban Government vehicles have blue plates with letters and numbers that indicate when and where the vehicle can operate.
Blue Cuban Cars cannot be used for personal use and can only be used for official government or professional purposes.

The risk to take your car to the beach is that there are many Traffic Inspectors strategically planted along most highways out of town and other high-traffic areas, stopping official cars to check their routes and to make sure they aren't being used for taking your family to the beach.

Top Cuban executives at government firms have light brown colored plates that allow more leeway yet they still may only be allowed to use their vehicles to travel to and from work.

Yet another form of control is what it really is said Emilio Perez, a chauffeur who is driving a Black Mercedes to escort elite foreign officials around Havana.

Russian Cars in Cuba
Since 1960's the Soviet Union was Cuba's God father and benefactor. For decades all Cuban license plates were boring black and white, and the first two letters specified the province where the car was registered.
The third letter determined the state or private ownership depending on the status.

The Soviets also had a very special Code of numbers for embassy license plates determined by country's recognition of the Russian Revolution: Plates for Britain, which is the first foreign country to accept the czar's ouster are still 001.

Cuba fashioned its own similar system with the first letter in the license plate indicating the 14 provinces the car originates, H is from Havana.
The letter K is "Particular" or "privately owned" car by a person or by a foreign firm.

Military Cars in Cuba
The powerful Military vehicles have mint-green with no front and only rear plates. Olive-green plates are for vehicles of the Ministry of the Interior, including El Comendante, Fidel Castro's fleet of armored black Mercedes 280s, which were built in the early 80's.

The most valuable seem to be the black plates are for reserved exclusively for foreign diplomats who don't have to adhere to traffic laws.
White plated cars of Cuban government ministers or heads of state organizations also drive as if they have diplomatic immunity but with reserved caution in case they are in danger of being replaced.

Diplomatic Cars in Cuba
Ironically its the last 3 numbers on diplomatic plates that show the professional rank of the driver. If you're behind a Mercedes with black license plate 179-002, that means the car belongs to the second most-important officer from the Russian embassy.
Even though everyone's supposed to be equal under Cuban socialism most everyone in Cuba knows that that is not true especially when a modern shiny black sedan with black license plates speeds along 5th Avenue in Miramar, Havana as if to show "I'm more important than you"

Decades ago Cuban officials' cars were Soviet imports, as the Cubans were encouraged to drive Russian Ladas or other square slow cars. Now many Cuban vehicles are imported from China or bought from Havana's Peugeot, Fiat and Mercedes dealerships, adding variety to the white-plated fleet.

Tourist Rental Cars in Cuba
Even the Toursit rental cars get maroon plates and foreign journalists, religious leaders and Cubans managers for overseas firms have orange plates.

If you see Red then its provisional plates that allow vehicles to circulate while Cuban authorities sort out just what color category is required.

American Classic Cars in Cuba
Best of all the countless 50year old American Classic roadsters that create a living moving museum along the island's potholed streets have bright yellow license plates, meaning they are normal vehicles owned by ordinary Cubans.

These dinosaurs from the good old days of Detroit's chrome-and-tail-fin era are still dominant on most Cuban roads because ordinary Cubans can not own new cars. Cubans can buy and sell only cars manufactured before the Castro's took power in 1959.

As yet another form of Control the buying of any newer vehicles requires Cuban government permission - including justifying how you can afford a car when the communist state controls well over 90 percent of the economy and pays employees an average of about $10 to $20 a month.

All this maybe confusing for a foreigner, but for Cubans it's normal. As they say in Cuba "No es Facil"

The Peugeot Company, started by the Peugeot family originally began its life as an ironmonger. Instead of cars the main items manufactured were coffee grinders and bicycles. It was not until 1876 that the company first started to make cars for the French public. The first cars were steam driven although in later years, with the help of Daimler; the internal combustion engine was adopted as the preferred means of propulsion.

In 1891 the first of these petrol driven cars was driven from Beaulieu-Valentigney to Paris and then onto Brest. The acclaim gained for this amazing feat cemented the car in the hearts of the French public and as a result the company sold three hundred cars in 1899, a marked improvement on the five sold in 1891. The range was further improved when the steering tiller was replaced with the wheel and electric ignition systems were added in 1902.

Development naturally continued in the 1910's when Peugeot once again entered the world of motor sport. With the help of Ettore Bugatti the cars were further improved with stylistic design and an engine that produced an impressive ten horsepower. Examples of these models can still be seen today in the French National Automobile Museum located in the town of Mulhouse.

After the First World War Peugeot steamed ahead with production, producing their one hundred thousandth car in 1925, the cars of this era predominantly had three cylinder engines although at this time the company were experimenting with two stroke diesel models. Strangely in 1926 cars were produced for the first time with front brakes, previously cars had only had braking systems in the rear. During the late twenties Peugeot even released a sports car using a six cylinder Bugatti engine that had been supercharged.

The thirties saw Peugeot produce the first ever electrically retractable roof, a development that the company is still proud of. During the war the company also produced an electric car named the VLV Electrique. After the war the company was also one of the first to re-establish production lines selling almost fourteen thousand model 202's in 1946. During the fifties Peugeot still managed to dominate the European markets. In 1955 the model 403 was the first car ever to break the one million units produced mark. Also during this decade the company entered the American car market.

The sixties and seventies were a seminal period for the company. The release of the Pininfarina designed 404 dawned a period of success all over the world in terms of sales as well as success in the Safari Rally. This period also saw Peugeot produce its five millionth car. The company managers also decided to expand in this period, taking over rival manufacturer Citroen in 1975 thanks to the financial assistance offered by the French government. The new company was labelled PSA although this was purely a parent company as both members of the group wanted to keep the identities of the two brands distinctly separate. The expansion however did not stop there; the company launched a successful bid to take over the European division of Chrysler in 1978.

This expansion meant that the company has overstretched itself and the early eighties were a time of financial uncertainty for PSA. Thankfully, the release of the immensely popular 205 in 1983 meant that the company was able to revive its fortunes and carry on producing distinctly French cars. Today, despite having to close the Coventry factory the company is still striving to produce cars that have a French nature and are popular with drivers of all ages. The motoring giant may be far removed from its humble coffee grinding heritage, but the traditions of this family company have not been forgotten.

Last March, during the Geneva Motor Show, Peugeot sent the curtains down to show off the Peugeot 207 RCup concept vehicle. And during that event, many auto experts and authorities have already seen that such a concept vehicle would be making way towards a newer and more powerful Peugeot vehicle.

And they were not mistaken. For now, this car and vehicle brand has presented and unveiled the Peugeot 207 Super 2000. It is Peugeot's rally car and it has already passed the first batch of development stages. It has also passed the testing for loose surfaces as well as those for tarmac surfaces.

The first time the Peugeot 207 Super 2000 rumbled to life, the technical manager of Peugeot Sport, Bruno Famin, and the project manager for this vehicle, Bertrand Vallat, were there to watch. After all, this was their baby and it was now all ready to try out new surfaces and new challenges. Sure, they were by the sidelines with spare parts Peugeot just in case anything happens but it looked like the Peugeot 207 Super 2000 was a tough one. What's more is that Famin and Vallat found out that the Peugeot 207 Super 2000 could actually perform and certainly would be taking the place of old Peugeot rally cars that have already gone to the scrap yard. The Peugeot 205 T16 and the Peugeot 206 WRC are some of these rally vehicles that did great on the tracks. In fact, the latter, has took home three world rally championships for itself and it even is still the holder of 65 podium finishes.

And as per Vallat, he says, "To start with on the loose surface, the 207 Super 2000 showed a good level of reliability which was confirmed again on tarmac some weeks later. We are only at the initial stages of development but all the test drivers who have followed each other behind the wheel of the car have been satisfied with both the handling and performance." And soon enough, the Peugeot 207 Super 200 would be made available for customers who would be using the vehicle for campaigns in various national championships.

In Europe much the same would happen. Morris set up its production line at Cowley in 1924, and soon outsold Ford, while beginning in 1923 to follow Ford's practise of vertical integration, buying Hotchkiss (engines), Wrigley (gearboxes), and Osberton (radiators), for instance, as well as competitors, such as Wolseley: in 1925, Morris had 41% of total British car production. Most British small-car assemblers, from Abbey to Xtra had gone under. Citroen did the same in France, coming to cars in 1919; between them and other cheap cars in reply such as Renault's

10CV and Peugeot's 5CV, they produced 550,000 cars in 1925, and Mors, Hurtu, and others could not compete.[13] Germany's first mass-manufactured car, the Opel 4PS Laubfrosch (Tree Frog), came off the line at Russelsheim in 1924, soon making Opel the top car builder in Germany, with 37.5% of the market.[13]

Most automobiles in use today are propelled by gasoline (also known as petrol) or diesel internal combustion engines, which are known to cause air pollution and are also blamed for contributing to climate change and global warming.[14] Increasing costs of oil-based fuels, tightening environmental laws and restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions are propelling work on alternative power systems for automobiles. Efforts to improve or replace existing technologies include the development of hybrid vehicles, and electric and hydrogen vehicles which do not release pollution into the air.

Petroleum fuels Main article: Petroleum fuel engine Diesel Main article: Diesel engine

Diesel-engined cars have long been popular in Europe with the first models being introduced as early as 1922 [15] by Peugeot and the first production car, Mercedes-Benz 260 D in 1936 by Mercedes-Benz. The main benefit of diesel engines is a 50% fuel burn efficiency compared with 27%[16] in the best gasoline engines. A down-side of the Diesel engine is that better filters are required to reduce the presence in the exhaust gases of fine soot particulates called diesel particulate matter. Manufacturers are now starting to fit[when?] diesel particulate filters to remove the soot. Many diesel-powered cars can run with little or no modifications on 100% biodiesel and combinations of other organic oils.

Gasoline Main article: Petrol engine
2007 Mark II (BMW) Mini Cooper

Gasoline engines have the advantage over diesel in being lighter and able to work at higher rotational speeds and they are the usual choice for fitting in high-performance sports cars. Continuous development of gasoline engines for over a hundred years has produced improvements in efficiency and reduced pollution. The carburetor was used on nearly all road car engines until the 1980s but it was long realised better control of the fuel/air mixture could be achieved with fuel injection. Indirect fuel injection was first used in aircraft engines from 1909, in racing car engines from the 1930s, and road cars from the late 1950s.[16] Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) is now starting to appear in production vehicles such as the 2007 (Mark II) BMW Mini. Exhaust gases are also cleaned up by fitting a catalytic converter into the exhaust system. Clean air legislation in many of the car industries most important markets has made both catalysts and fuel injection virtually universal fittings. Most modern gasoline engines also are capable of running with up to 15% ethanol mixed into the gasoline - older vehicles may have seals and hoses that can be harmed by ethanol. With a small amount of redesign, gasoline-powered vehicles can run on ethanol concentrations as high as 85%. 100% ethanol is used in some parts of the world (such as Brazil), but vehicles must be started on pure gasoline and switched over to ethanol once the engine is running. Most gasoline engined cars can also run on LPG with the addition of an LPG tank for fuel storage and carburettor modifications to add an LPG mixer. LPG produces fewer toxic emissions and is a popular fuel for fork-lift trucks that have to operate inside buildings.

The hydrogen powered FCHV (Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicle) was developed by Toyota in 2005 Biofuels Main articles: Biofuel, Ethanol fuel, and biogasoline

Ethanol, other alcohol fuels (biobutanol) and biogasoline have widespread use an automotive fuel. Most alcohols have less energy per liter than gasoline and are usually blended with gasoline. Alcohols are used for a variety of reasons - to increase octane, to improve emissions, and as an alternative to petroleum based fuel, since they can be made from agricultural crops. Brazil's ethanol program provides about 20% of the nation's automotive fuel needs, as a result of the mandatory use of E25 blend of gasoline throughout the country, 3 million cars that operate on pure ethanol, and 6 million dual or flexible-fuel vehicles sold since 2003.[17] that run on any mix of ethanol and gasoline. The commercial success of "flex" vehicles, as they are popularly known, have allowed sugarcane based ethanol fuel to achieve a 50% market share of the gasoline market by April 2008.[18][19][20]

The cars we see on the forecourts of Peugeot dealerships today can trace a rich heritage back more than a hundred years. The company however originally manufactured many other items before it decided to enter the car manufacturing industry. Far removed from cars in dealerships was the manufacture of steel rods that were used to construct crinoline dresses. It was through the manufacture of these circular rods however that eventually led Peugeot into making their first form of transport, the humble bicycle. In fact the nineteenth century saw Peugeot using their knowledge of steel to produce 'Le Grand Bi' more commonly known around the world as the penny farthing.

Once Peugeot had decided to manufacture cars it was under the name of Armand Peugeot. Their first car, rather than utilising internal combustion used steam power as a means of propulsion. This three wheeled car did not however make it to dealerships; only four were ever made making them somewhat of a collector's item today. The preference of steam however did not continue for long, with the help of Gotlieb Daimler the internal combustion engine soon became the power plant of choice.

Always a company to embrace technological advances, the cars in the early Peugeot dealerships were the first to have rubber tyres, created to improve the ride quality of early cars they were severely limited by the fact that instead of being pneumatic, were instead made from solid rubber. Even in this early stage however Peugeot had a clear dispensation for motor sport, entering these early cars into various racing events of the time.

At the turn of century Peugeot had cemented its place in the hearts of the French motoring fraternity. Dealerships began were founded amazingly selling three hundred cars out of a total of twelve hundred sold in France during 1899. Also during this period Peugeot manufactured motorcycles, using the bicycle heritage from previous years. In the four years after 1899 Peugeot became France's favourite car manufacturer, selling more than half of the total cars sold in dealerships across the country.

It was not until the twenties that Peugeot made the decision to divide its bicycle and car manufacturing efforts. The bike company continues until this day producing some of the best bikes on the market while the motoring division continued to court the French public with affordable and reliable cars. During this period, dealerships saw the arrival of the Type 201, the cheapest new car in all of France throughout the twenties. It was with this car that Peugeot tested their retractable roof designs. This theme is still present today with the Peugeot producing the 206 cabriolet, a design harking back to the immensely popular 201.

After the war years Peugeot turned its back somewhat on a French public who struggled to produce disposable income, instead making a concerted effort to open many dealerships in the United States. Not being totally successful in capturing the rather insular American car market it was during this period that collaboration with Renault was established as well as working closely with Volvo on a variety of design aspects.

As a result of great selling figures in Peugeot dealerships during the seventies and with the help of the French government a takeover of rival manufacturer Citroen was launched. The buyout saw many dealerships come under the control of the company making it the largest car manufacturer in France. A situation that continues to this day thanks to the efforts of company chiefs to give each company its own distinct identity.

So what can be drawn from this history? Undoubtedly Peugeot has a rich heritage in manufacturing; also it has proved a dedication to producing affordable and reliable cars not only for the French public but for the entire globe. Who would have guessed that one of the most illustrious car manufacturers of the modern day started their existence manufacturing dresses?

Although the Peugeot factory has been in manufacturing for many centuries it was not until 1889 that they decided to enter into the automobile industry and begin to sell their cars through dealerships. Peugeot originally manufactured crinoline dresses which used steel rods for rigidity. The making of these circular rods eventually led into making bicycles in the nineteenth century; the most famous being the Peugeot 'Le Grand Bi' (penny farthing) bicycle.

Armand Peugeot as the company was originally known would not enter the automobile market until late in the nineteenth century with a three wheeled steam driven motor car. Only four of these seminal cars were made and as such, not many made it to the forecourts of dealerships. Steam however was soon forgotten by Peugeot in favour of internal combustion with the help of Gottlieb Daimler.

Peugeot have always been a leader in the industry and were in fact the first company to fit rubber tyres to their cars; although these were not pneumatic and instead made of solid rubber. It was at this point that Peugeot entered motor racing, despite the cars resembling horse drawn carriages and still being steered by a tiller.

By the turn of the nineteenth century dealerships were sprouting with three hundred cars being sold in 1899 out of a total of 1200 cars sold in the whole of France. Peugeot not forgetting their bicycle heritage also produced a motorbike at the turn of the century and continue to do so to this day. The success of the company as a national institution was seemingly already assured by 1903 with over half of France's car sales.

The company divided its energies during the twenties, one focussing on the bikes and the other focussing on the cars. Throughout this period Peugeot continued to put affordable cars onto their dealership forecourts with the Type 201 being the cheapest car in France. Innovation was always a consistent theme; the development of retracting roof was an attempt to coax rich Frenchmen with stylistic designs and luxurious cars. The curvaceous bodies and sloping headlights of this period would be features in Peugeot design for generations after.

During the fifties Peugeot began to open dealerships in America trying to capture some of the booming economy in the post war states. It was at this point that many collaborations with other European companies occurred, such as a combining efforts with Renault in 1966 and Volvo in 1972. The company also utilised the exquisite designing abilities of the Pininfarina house to make models even more attractive to buyers.

The seventies saw a major move by Peugeot to take over rival French manufacturer, Citroen. This meant an even more extensive number of dealerships at their disposal and meant that with the formation of PSA (Peugeot Societe Anonyme) Peugeot were part of the biggest car manufacturer in France. PSA worked towards keeping the company identities separate throughout this period and the distinctive flare of each brand continues to this day.

With ongoing growth and successful dealerships throughout Europe, Peugeot were able to purchase the European division of Chrysler. This had mixed success and in fact caused trouble for the PSA's financial position. Despite a poor period throughout the eighties Peugeot were able to recoup the losses from the previous decade and achieve a strong position throughout the nineties. Despite losing the American sales base in this period the company still does well in Europe and will continue to do so with innovative technologies and quaint French styling.

Ultimately the company has a rich and diverse heritage; after a relatively modest beginning manufacturing dresses they have managed to become one of the automotive powerhouses of Europe. In today's highly competitive car industry they will be hard pushed to remain popular and continue to grow as they had done in the previous century.
